This provoked me to reason quietly within myself. I assumed that these people
would never be able to buy books, because any money they had would be used for
food and other necessities of life. So with the little money I had, I started
buying books, Bibles, Gospels and educational materials for the children and
distributing them among the people in the slums and the poor villages. It was then
that my eyes were opened to another tragic reality. I noticed that many adults
didn't know how to read, so the books that I gave were often of no use to them.
These people had never had the opportunity to go to school.
ABC children's Aid was founded in 1988 by Guðrún
Margrét Pálsdóttir. Here's her story as to why;

"In 1985, whilst I was working as a nurse in
Iceland, I decided to take extended leave for one
year in order to travel around the world. This year
was supposed to be full of exploration and
adventure for me. But instead, God opened my eyes
to the sad realities of our world. As I was traveling
through Central America, I was deeply touched by
seeing so many people in terrible poverty,
especially by the sight of many children sleeping on
sidewalks.
These situations touched me so deeply
that I decided to come back to
Central-America after my year long
journey in order to teach the people how to read and write. As often happens, God
had different plans! I never travelled back to Central-America, but instead
established ABC Children's Aid in Iceland.

For the last twenty years, ABC Children's Aid has been able to help thousands of
children to go to school and has also provided many of them with a home and with much
needed medical care.
